Fair to say, many of us expected Rockstar Games to stay tight lipped with regards to Grand Theft Auto VI until the end of the year.
By all accounts though, the studio is reportedly preparing to make a major reveal.
It’s not to do with gameplay, pricing, nor when pre-orders may go live; instead, it supposedly concerns Project ROME, a modding engine.
If that’s left you a little confused, allow me to explain.

Rockstar Games has supposedly been working on Project ROME for quite some time, with ROME standing in for Rockstar Online Modding Engine.
I suppose it’s their way of prepping for whatever the next evolution of GTA Online is.
The idea is that the Project ROME engine will allow players an unprecedented level of freedom, letting them build entire cities or totally overhaul and customise game environments if they really want to.
It’s also believed they’ll be able to make their own missions, servers, and game modes without the need for any third-party mod content.

According to known leaker Tez2, also known by his Twitter/X username of TezFunz2, Rockstar is preparing to unveil the engine soon, as spotted by TheGTABase.
The idea is that Rockstar Games could create its own metaverse with something that echoes Fortnite’s creative mode which has gone from strength to strength in recent years.
Of course, as with all rumours, this has to be taken with a pinch of salt.
Project ROME has surfaced in rumours on multiple occasions but we don’t truly know Rockstar’s intent for it until an official announcement is made.

It may not even be linked to GTA VI, although it does seem plausible that it might be.
Rockstar was supposedly previously in contact with major Fortnite and Roblox creators concerning the creation of custom experience inside Project ROME.
For months now, we’ve all been wondering what the next evolution of GTA Online might look like and, well, this sounds a lot like the answer we’ve been searching for.
GTA Online already offers players a huge virtual sandbox, but what Project ROME aims to do would elevate things to the next level if that is indeed what’s happening here.

As I’ve hopefully made clear, this is all very much based on whispers for now, so fans are tempering their expectations.
“So they’re going the Fortnite creative route for GTA Online, can’t say I’m surprised but I’m very intrigued by this,” wrote Reddit user Slotball.
“Want to try being the next Roblox maybe,” added justmadeforthat.
We’ll keep an eye out for all official communications concerning the mod engine.
