Those excited for Grand Theft Auto VI are busy saving their pennies right now, as most of the fanbase assumes that it’s going to cost at least $80 at launch.
The whole “GTA VI will cost $80” debate all started back in January, with the release of industry analyst Matthew Ball’s State of Video Gaming 2025 report.
Since then, Ball’s report has proven true– just not in the case of Grand Theft Auto VI.
First, it was Mario Kart World. Nintendo’s decision to launch the game at a premium price point ticked off millions of people, but they held fast and didn’t buckle under the controversy.

But then came the big one: Microsoft announced that some first-party titles would be sold at a premium from here on out.
"We will adjust the pricing of some of our new first-party games starting this holiday season to $79.99," Microsoft revealed in the Q&A section on their website (per Eurogamer).
"This update will apply to physical and digital versions. That said, different games and expansions will continue to be offered at a variety of price points."
Over on the r/GTA6 subreddit, most users think this spells bad news for Rockstar Games’ upcoming title.

“Really sucks because no other 80 dollar game will be even close to GTA VI but publishers will insist on pricing it the same,” commented user JimmyJabble.
“I mean it was probably already going to cost 80$ and it's worth it,” replied user Corvo_Attano-.
“But that won't stop me from saying f**k Nintendo to hell.”
Yeah, I think it’s a bit of a foregone conclusion at this point.

Microsoft jumping in on the $80 price point trend really was the nail in the coffin on this one. I think we should be bracing ourselves for that $80 price tag announcement towards the end of the year.
