Since its inception back in 1997, the Grand Theft Auto franchise has gone on to become one of the most iconic in gaming history.

However, with the wait for the next instalment, Grand Theft Auto VI, taking well over a decade to be released, it is no wonder that fans are looking to the past in the meantime.

This news comes after one such fan recently took to r/GTA6 to share an interesting discovery.

According to them, they had stumbled across a post on a Facebook group which showed some pages taken from a book gifted to Microsoft employees back in 2006.

The bizarre book featured mentions of many different games, some of which have been released over the years and some others that never saw the light of day, and one such title includes none other than Grand Theft Auto VI itself.

However, there is a catch.

According to user CarllSagan, this is not actually a book for Microsoft employees but rather a fun little booklet that came with a game magazine back in the early 2000s.

“This isn't actually confidential (old) Microsoft information, just clever print design,” they explained.

“Thanks for posting, I love stuff like this.”

Ok, so why was GTA VI mentioned in a book from 2006 when Grand Theft Auto V was not released until 2013?

Not only that but why does the magazine claim that GTA VI would be released in 2007?

Well, we have to take into consideration that, much like many other game series, the Grand Theft Auto franchise does not simply go from 1-6.

Of the mainline entries, it has been Grand Theft Auto, Grand Theft Auto 2, Grand Theft Auto III, Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, Grand Theft Auto IV and Grand Theft Auto V.

As a result, when referring to ‘GTA 6’, this booklet was in fact talking about GTA IV. Confusing, I know.

User Subjectdelta 44 wrote, “They thought GTA 4 would be GTA 6 because they're considering Vice City as GTA 4 and San Andreas as GTA 5.”

However, user Arkenway joked, “Or they didn't know how to read Roman numerals.”

It is definitely a blast from the past and just goes to show how far we have come with the Grand Theft Auto series.

Now to wait just a few more months until Grand Theft Auto VI is finally launched.
