A video game industry veteran has shared his thoughts on the next iteration of GTA Online, and he believes the GTA 6 spin-off could resemble an MMORPG.
Following months of rumours and speculation (and of course those infamous gameplay leaks), Rockstar Games officially revealed GTA 6 to the world in December 2023. Those two years have flown by, it has to be said.
As soon as the first trailer dropped for the next entry in the Grand Theft Auto series, it was almost instantly smashing view records on YouTube, and the second GTA VI trailer shared very similar success.
Despite being delayed on a couple of occasions, the anticipation for GTA VI remains through the roof, and now fans are eagerly awaiting the arrival of the third trailer. With GTA VI releasing in 2026 (assuming it suffers no further delay), hopefully the next trailer isn't too far away.

That being said, as hyped as we are for Grand Theft Auto VI, Rockstar Games has so far released no details on the next iteration of GTA Online. It’s pretty much a guarantee that it's coming, especially with it being a massive cash cow, but all we can do right now is speculate on what new features it might bring.

Will the Next GTA Online Be an MMORPG?
During an interview with Wccftech (thanks Dexerto), video game industry veteran Richard Vogel, credited for being involved with the development of Mass Effect, Star Wars: The Old Republic and New World, believes that GTA Online might resemble an MMORPG.
Talking about speculation he’s heard regarding the new iteration of GTA Online from industry peers, Vogel said: “If what I have been hearing about GTA VI’s features and gameplay is true, it could evolve into an MMORPG, as many of its planned features are typically found in MMORPGs.”
If GTA Online does end up being something that closely resembles an MMORPG, it might be a bold move for Rockstar Games, but it could also be a decision that makes a lot of sense.
For starters, it would mean that the next iteration of GTA Online wouldn't be a reskin of the previous version with nicer graphics and some gameplay tweaks. There’s already a huge community that takes part in role-playing servers on PC, so it would certainly lean into that popular niche and make it more mainstream.
Of course, this is all speculation at this point, so we’ll just have to wait until Rockstar Games releases official details. If it's anything like the original GTA Online that launched on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, it will launch shortly after the main game.
Grand Theft Auto VI will be released on 19 November 2026 for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S. The PC version hasn't been officially announced yet.
