GTA VI fans are hyped over the potential return of Liberty City, the location of the beloved GTA III.
When it comes to iconic locations in Grand Theft Auto, many would likely argue that the Miami-inspired Vice City, the location of GTA: Vice City, tops the lot. However, it’s also very likely that the New York-inspired Liberty City would be a close second.
Those who love nothing more than exploring the sunny vistas and stunning beach palm trees of Vice City will be over the moon knowing that this location is returning in GTA VI, but, at least according to recent gossip, it will not be the only returning location of GTA.

Check out the second GTA VI trailer below!
After a hiatus that lasted a good 15 months from when the first GTA VI trailer made its debut in December 2023, Rockstar Games finally treated us to the highly anticipated second trailer last week, and it did not disappoint.
What’s more, just a week earlier, we also got a solid release date for GTA VI of 26 May 2026, albeit one that also confirmed a delay. That’s assuming, of course, that it doesn't get delayed again.

So, what has led us to believe that Liberty City is returning in GTA VI, other than it having a huge map with many of its areas yet to be revealed, I hear you ask?
The owner of the Twitter account GTA6Alerts believes that Liberty City is returning for several reasons. Firstly, one of the game's two main protagonists, Lucia, is not only from Liberty City, but also served time in its Liberty Penitentiary (as featured in the second trailer).
Moreover, in the second trailer for GTA VI, a Liberty City-registered number plate was spotted on a car, and a biker featured in one of its official screenshots is wearing a Liberty City baseball cap.

Other likely theories were mentioned on the thread, but perhaps one of the other interesting hints for a potential return of Liberty City is Rockstar Games recently shutting down a fan-made GTA V mod that recreated the city in question.
For what it’s worth, Rockstar Games also closed down a fan-made GTA V mod that recreated the concept of the GTA VI map. Make of that what you will.
“The prologue could absolutely be set in Liberty City,” suggested IceColdKilla9 in response to the thread.
“Liberty City would be good, but probably as a flashback mission,” said Ruemu25

Of course, this is all hearsay at this time. That being said, it’s been long speculated that Liberty City could return in GTA VI and at the very least, this Twitter thread has just reminded us of that prospect.
We’ll keep you posted as soon as Rockstar Games officially reveals new details on the GTA VI map in the coming months.
Grand Theft Auto VI will be released on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S. Its PC release is yet to be announced.
