GTA VI is going to be a big game no doubt about it. It’ll likely exceed Red Dead Redemption 2’s size by miles and as such players are bracing for a killer install size.

New games are great but as they get bigger and better than what was released previously so does their file size. Unless you can accomplish some technical wizardry you’re looking at above 50GB for the majority of new AAA titles.

Rockstar Games always produces colossal games as it attempts to push the boundaries of what open-worlds should be, and GTA VI is likely going to be no exception.

The fans have been thinking and theorising a lot about the upcoming title, which is now scheduled for a May 2026 release, and one hot topic is how much hard drive space it’s going to rob from us.

If you search around the online forums and discussions the prevailing theory is GTA VI will “probably around 100-150GB” in size, which is going to take a big chunk out of our storage space whichever way you slice it.

For reference, GTA V’s original release on the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 didn’t exceed around 17GB.

In comparison the PC version was 70GB, and when the game was ported to the Xbox Series X/S and PlayStation 5, plus upgraded, it shot up to around 100GB.

Then, Red Dead Redemption 2 dropped which clocks in at around 150GB on both Xbox and PlayStation platforms. This is before we consider the rumoured Xbox Series X/S and PlayStation 5 upgrade too, which will probably increase the install size even more.

With GTA VI made solely for new-gen hardware it’s likely that GTA VI will comfortably sit at 150GB as a minimum. Looking at some of the open-world leaks though it feels like it could very easily break 200GB though, and perhaps the PC version of the game will go even higher.

Of course this is GTA VI we’re talking about so I’m sure whatever the install size gamers will just suck it up and get it downloaded for fear of missing out.

GTA VI launches in May 2026 which means you’ve still got plenty of time to clear that backlog and make some room, and if you can’t bear to part with some of your installed games nearer the time there are always portable hard drives…
