Fans excited for Rockstar Games’ upcoming surefire megahit Grand Theft Auto VI aren’t particularly impressed with a new technical report stating that the game might run at 30fps on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series S/X.
A report from Digital Foundry states that they believe, based on information gleaned from its latest trailers, that Grand Theft Auto VI likely won’t run at anything above 30fps on modern consoles.
“You could certainly imagine a world where Rockstar adds in a 60fps mode that still runs at 30fps during cutscenes to keep fidelity high, but it's hard to imagine a 60fps mode that also includes the RTGI and RT reflections that lends the game world its realistic look”, revealed Digital Foundry’s Will Judd.

“At that point, the game world would look so dramatically different - and require so much additional work to recreate the lighting and reflections using rasterised techniques - that it scarcely seems believable.”
So, how are the folks over on the r/GTA6 subreddit feeling about this? Relaxed and chill, I assume?
Nah, they’re pretty upset about it.
“There better be a performance mode, or I won't be buying it 'till it releases on PC,” commented user Dacoleman1. “30fps is unplayable.”

“Disappointment. I understand there are technical limitations but 30fps just isn’t satisfying in fast paced games,” replied user VienneseDude.
“40fps is the minimum for a smooth experience, especially when you are used to 60+ fps. RDR2 on console is unplayable even hours into the game.”
Now, personally, I’d be waiting for a 60fps mode myself. I know it’s a bit of a first world problem, but it’s simply what I’m used to these days.
That being said, I would be surprised if there isn’t some kind of performance mode for GTA VI that can at least target something in the 40-50fps range.

Perhaps for consoles like the standard PS5 and the Xbox Series S that’s a big ask, but I’d be shocked if it’s not an option on something like the PlayStation 5 Pro.
