A recent update for The Elder Scrolls may provide some hope of what we could expect from user-created content in GTA VI.
We’re now less than a year away from the release of the next entry in Rockstar Games’ Grand Theft Auto series, and with each day that draws us nearer, the hype will continue to build.
Despite being officially revealed in December 2023, there’s still a lot we don’t know about GTA VI. Sure, we know that at least one of its locations will be the returning Miami-inspired Vice City, and it will star two protagonists, Jason and Lucia, but plenty else remains under wraps.

For example, we know even less about its multiplayer offering, GTA Online. Rockstar Games hasn't announced a GTA Online successor at the time of writing, but there’s no way it's not releasing a new iteration of its cash cow following the launch of GTA VI.
But what can we expect from the new version of GTA Online, other than multiplayer shenanigans and criminal enterprises? Well, if a recent content update for The Elder Scrolls Online is anything to go by, some fans will surely be hoping for mod support for PC and consoles.
For the first time in The Elder Scrolls Online, players can access user-created add-ons with the PlayStation and Xbox versions of the game.

Granted, it only relates to the user interface, but it’s a step in the right direction, and will hopefully follow in the footsteps of other Bethesda titles, Skyrim, Fallout 4 and Starfield, offering proper mods on Xbox.
Earlier in the year, rumours were making the rounds regarding ‘Project ROME’ being in development by Rockstar Games. Rumours claim that Rockstar Games has had conversations with the folks at Roblox and Fortnite on how to create and implement user-created content.
I guess the name ‘Project ROME’ is inspired by the old saying “Rome wasn't built in a day”. It’s also reportedly an acronym for “Rockstar Online Modding Engine”.
Bethesda has long set the standard of allowing mods in its console games, well, at least mostly on Xbox, and it would be great if Rockstar Games followed suit with its next iteration of GTA Online.

Of course, this is purely rumour and speculative at this time and should be taken with a pinch of salt until proven otherwise. We’ll update you when we learn more about GTA VI and GTA Online.
Grand Theft Auto VI is currently scheduled to be released on 26 May 2026 for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S.
