Rockstar Games has shed some light on the canon ending to Grand Theft Auto V recently, and fans are curious if it has any potential implications for the next game in the franchise.
It’s likely been a while since most of you completed GTA 5, but you probably still remember how the game ends… or, at least, one of the three ways the game can end.
Much in the same way they did for Grand Theft Auto IV, Rockstar Games offered players a choice at the end of GTA V: kill Trevor, kill Michael, or attempt to keep all three protagonists alive with option C, titled “Deathwish”. I don’t think I’ve met a single person who chose anything other than Ending C, regardless of how incredibly annoying Trevor is at times, yet it still poses an interesting question: which of GTA V’s endings is its canon ending?
Well, we can now at least confirm that it’s definitely not Ending B, better known as the “Kill Michael” ending. That’s because Rockstar Games has brought protagonist Michael back for some new missions in the GTA Online update A Safehouse in the Hills, which means that he clearly survived the events of GTA V’s conclusion.

This has got gamers over on the r/GTA6 subreddit curious about other potential GTA V cameos in the future, as this opens up the possibility of either Franklin or Michael making an appearance in Grand Theft Auto VI.
“I don't think we'll see any of the protagonists, but a secondary character is certainly possible," commented user Hellraiser1123.
"I could see Tracey showing up in Vice City, still trying to become famous."
“None of the 3, at least not in story mode”, replied user BigfootsBestBud.
“I think Lamar or Jimmy make the most sense as GTA V cameos. And then Gay Tony once again from GTA 4 makes a lot of sense bringing a new nightclub to Vice City.”
Of course, it’s important to note that, whatever Rockstar Games plans to do with their past protagonists in the future, I highly doubt we’ll ever see Trevor return.
Steven Ogg, who played Trevor in GTA V, has made it very clear that he isn’t too keen on returning to the role in any way, so while we may hear passing references to Trevor down the line… it’s unlikely we’ll see the character pop in any kind of voiced capacity (unless Rockstar Games opts to recast him).
