If last night’s PlayStation State of Play didn’t make it obvious, it’s pretty clear that the next few months are going to be stacked for video game releases.
This week’s showcases have revealed the release dates for a number of upcoming games, with State of Play announcing release dates for games like Control Resonant, Onimusha: Way of the Sword, and Ace Combat 8: Wings of Theve.
If you’re a person who buys a lot of new games, the period between August and October is looking pretty busy, and there’s really only one culprit to blame: Grand Theft Auto VI.
As one of the most hyped up games of the last ten years, GTA VI is sure to smash all sales records and be the one thing everyone is talking about for months. Just look at the social media traffic the thing causes, it’s an absolute behemoth.

It’s also caused game developers looking at releasing a game within the same window of time to panic a little, and this year’s list of release dates is proof of that.
Taking a look at the new games releasing over the next few months, June is looking like a good one for RPG fans, with Gothic 1 Remake, The Adventures of Elliot: The Millennium Tales, and Star Fox being big releases.

July gets a little quieter, where AAA releases include Assassin's Creed Black Flag Resynced and Splatoon Raiders alongside a bunch of smaller AA and indie titles.
August is quite similar, with Beast of Reincarnation and Marvel: TOKON Fighting Souls decking out that month’s top headliners.
Once we get into September though, that’s where the fun begins. It kicks off with the releases of The Blood of Dawnwalker and Halloween: The Game in the first week of September.
After that, we’ve got Marvel’s Wolverine, Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War 4, and the PS5 port of Dune Awakening coming out mid-September, which I’m sure will keep many players busy for the time being.
The last week of September and the first week of October seem rammed though.
Dragon Quest 11 S: Echoes of an Elusive Age Switch 2 Edition, Control Resonant, Silent Hill: Townfall, Harvest Moon: Echoes of Teradea, and Onimusha: Way of the Sword each release in the last week of September, while Rayman Legends Retold, Dynasty Warriors 3 Remastered, Star Wars Galactic Racer and Ace Combat 8: Wings of Theve.
That's also not mentioning other, unannounced release dates which may come later this week during Summer Game Fest.
For example, Gears of War: E-Day is very likely to get a release date announcement at the Xbox Games Showcase on Sunday, with September being the most likely date for it to release.

As for November, it’s only really GTA VI which has a confirmed release date, with nothing else releasing around it.
In all honesty, it’s probably for the best that developers have tried getting their games in before GTA VI takes over the hype cycle (or have delayed it to 2027, as is the case with Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis and Fable being pushed back to February).
But it does leave a question of how noisy September is going to be. Are publishers adjusting sales targets to account for the busier competition, or are these games going to cannibalise each others’ sales that would not happen in an otherwise normal year?
If anything, if I was a publisher I’d start feeling safer releasing a game closer to GTA VI than releasing one in September.
