All in all, I’d say this has been a pretty good week for gaming. We kicked off the week with yet another excellent episode of The Last of Us. Then, Dead Space reviews dropped, teasing what appears to be a pure horror treat and the cherry on top? The long-awaited remaster of GoldenEye 007 finally landed on Nintendo Switch Online and Xbox Game Pass.

This classic first-person shooter was a must-have back in the days of the N64 and last year, it was announced during a Nintendo Direct that Rare would be bringing a remaster to Xbox and Nintendo consoles. The remaster is playable in 4K resolution with an improved framerate, split-screen co-op play, plus there’s new achievements. Don’t expect the original cheat codes to work though, on Xbox at least.

You may recall the original game’s DK mode, paintball mode, or perhaps the Aztec and Egyptian secret levels. As reported by Polygon, these were unlocked in the original by completing missions under certain conditions - often within a time limit - but you could also input a series of cheat codes. Well, those original codes still work on the Nintendo Switch version of the game but not on Xbox.

An Xbox spokesperson explained to the site, “This version of GoldenEye 007 is, for the majority, as players know and love from the 1997 version. Specifically for cheats, these can be unlocked by completing levels in the required time, rather than with the button codes previously used." So there you have it. You’ll just have to put in the work instead.

It’s worth noting that if you’re looking to play the game on Nintendo Switch Online, you’ll need the Online Expansion Pack membership which is the slightly pricier option. It’s worth it though for this gem, surely.
