'Prey' Was Directly Influenced By 'God Of War', Director Confirms

Prey, the latest entry to the Predator series of films, took inspiration from Sony's God Of War for the tactics that protagonist Naru and the Predator use to hunt each other.

Spoilers for Prey follow.

Twisting the established conventions of the Predator films by turning back time, Prey sees a Comanche woman take on the extra-terrestrial warrior during the 18th century. Using her sharp wits and keen sense for her surroundings, Naru bests the alien in spite of its "advanced" weaponry, but it turns out that both of their strategies were actually influenced by the God of War himself.

Take a look at the trailer right here:

"I teased a while ago that I took inspiration from the latest God of War video game, and those two things are in the trailer," said director Dan Trachtenberg in an interview with ComicBook.com. "One is his shield, that you see briefly."

You can spot that collapsible shield at about two minutes, six seconds in the trailer above, and that's of course a clear nod to the way that Kratos manoeuvres his shield in the 2018 title.

The second moment isn't as obvious but it proves that great minds think alike. "And the other is not a Predator gadget, but just the way that Naru, wields her axe, she invents something very cool for that tomahawk," continued Trachtenberg. Skip to one minute, 47 seconds in the trailer and Naru weaves rope around the handle of the tomahawk so that she is able to throw it and then pull it back to her. Just like a certain someone's Leviathan axe.

"I think the shield is something super cool. There's a couple things that are the same, but even those things function slightly differently," concluded the director. The more you know.
