Since its launch back in 2005, the God of War series has centered around our favourite Spartan warrior Kratos.

However, with his legacy potentially set to be passed on, fans are left feeling divided over the series being headed by someone other than the God of War himself.

The God of War franchise recently celebrated its 20th anniversary. Check out the trailer below!

First released twenty-years ago by Santa Monica Studio, God of War began its life as a trilogy and was released in 2005, 2007, and 2010 respectively.

The original series took place in ancient Greece and followed the story of Kratos, a Spartan warrior who serves the Olympian gods and is tasked with killing Ares.

The trilogy was a success and much to the surprise of its original fans, Santa Monica released a reboot of God of War back in 2018.

This time Kratos was joined by his son Atreus as the two journeyed across ancient Scandinavia following the death of their wife/mother.

God of War was soon followed by God of War Raganarök in 2022 and in this sequel, Atreus took on a key role with the player able to switch between playing as Kratos and his unruly son.

As a result, it is believed by many that for the next instalment (which has not yet been confirmed), Atreus will be our brand-new protagonist, marking the first time that Kratos has taken a backseat.

However, this potential decision has left fans feeling divided.

Taking to r/GodofWar, one user posted, “Why do you think Atreus as main protagonist would be even close to Kratos?”

I often hear how Kratos’ story should end and Atreus should be the next main character.

But even the creator of GoW said that there is no God of War without Kratos.

I personally think the same way. He is the face of this franchise. For me it’s like you want a Batman game without Batman.”

It wasn’t long before the comments came flooding in and fans were quick to share their opinion.

“I would have nothing against a game focused on Atreus,” the top comment read.

However, another user believes that Santa Monica should take inspiration from another hit game.

“Yeah, I don’t mind a Atreus focused story DLC,” they shared.

Or an Atreus focused spinoff that’s like Miles Morales.”

It remains to be seen who will be at the helm of the next God of War instalment, especially with the current radio silence from its developers.
