'Ghostbusters: Afterlife' Sequel Has A Release Date

'Ghostbusters: Afterlife' Sequel Has A Release Date

The sequel to Ghostbusters: Afterlife officially has a release date, and the gang are heading back to New York.

Ghostbusters: Afterlife was an all-around good time. The film perfectly balanced nostalgia-fuelled fan service with brand new characters and ghouls to please fans both new and old - and hey, the film stars Paul Rudd. It’s hard not to love a movie starring Hollywood’s most wholesome, unaging leading man.

Critics were slightly more mixed in their responses but Ghostbusters: Afterlife landed a Rotten Tomatoes audience score of 94 percent, prompting a sequel to subsequently be announced in April of this year. The good news is, we now know when the sequel is coming.

If you’re yet to catch up on this gem, take a look at Paul Rudd’s Mr. Grooberson in action in Ghostbusters: Afterlife.

Unfortunately, we do have a while to wait. The sequel to Ghostbusters: Afterlife is officially coming on 20 December, 2023, with both director Jason Reitman and writer Gil Kenan once again on board. Sony are largely keeping the plot under wraps but we do know that the film will be set in New York City which, of course, is where the original 1984 film was set.

If you’re yet to catch up with the revival, Ghostbusters: Afterlife is set 32 years after the events of Ghostbusters II on a farm in Oklahoma, which just so happens to belong to the descendants of Egon Spengler. Being a Ghostbusters story, weird and wonderful ghosts start appearing on the farm, sending a whole new generation of Ghostbusters on an entertaining journey.

It’s unsurprising that the sequel is heading to New York given Ghostbusters: Afterlife’s post-credits scene which saw Winston Zeddemore and Janine Melnitz reminiscing about the good ol’ days. Winston reveals that he rescued the Ecto-1 car, taking it back to the fire station where we then see the original containment unit mysteriously beeping. It seems like some original ghouls could be making a return, and I’m already excited about it.
