The Gears of War series is one of Microsoft’s flagship series, even if it feels like that franchise has been neglected in recent years.

When the original Gears of War was released for the Xbox 360 way back in 2006, it not only became one of Microsoft’s leading exclusives to rival Halo, but for many, it became another reason for gamers to pick up the console.

Perhaps in a similar way as Resident Evil 4 revolutionised the over-the-shoulder camera perspective, Gears of War would be an influence for would-be cover-based third-person shooters for years to come.

Developed by Epic Games at the time, the Gears of War series would spawn two more sequels, as well as a spin-off, Gears of War: Judgement which was co-developed by People Can Fly, before The Coalition had taken over duties.

At its core, at least for the original trilogy, the bromance duo of Marcus Pheonix and Dominic Santiago would lead the charge in humanity's survival against an alien threat known as the Locust. Whether you played on your lonesome or with a co-op buddy, a Gears of War story campaign is still one of the most fun experiences on Xbox.

Another fun experience of the original Gears of War trilogy is its competitive multiplayer, which has been somewhat neglected over the years as the series understandably shifted focus to more recent entries.

Well, as reported by Gameinfinitus.com, the original Gears of War trilogy has had its online matchmaking improved, which means after all these years, players should be able to find matches more easily whether it be competitive matches or the popular Horde mode.

As for what the future may hold for the series, fans are still waiting for news on Gears 6, but a job listing has hinted that a new game could soon be on the way. Hopefully, Microsoft will announce a new entry for the series in the coming months.

If you want to jump back into some classic Gears of War action, then you’re in luck, because the entire classic series is backwards compatible on Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One.
