'God Of War' Is Secretly A Violent 'Shrek' Remake, According To Cory Barlog

They think it's all ogre

2018's God Of War is pretty much a masterpiece, I think most of us would agree. Director Cory Barlog and his team at SIE Santa Monica Studio deftly retooled Kratos for a new generation, turning him from a hyper-violent one-note bore into a struggling single parent coming to terms with the horrors of his past.

My favourite thing about this journey is that it feels completely organic and serves the story God Of War is trying to tell. Kratos' history isn't forgotten or rewritten - it's reckoned with. That's what I love about God Of War. Others, apparently, like the fact that it's secretly a remake of the classic Dreamworks animation Shrek. To each their own, I suppose.

Take a look at our all-time favourite PlayStation 4 games below. God Of War of course made the cut.

Over on Twitter, a fan by the name of BT_BlackThunder jokingly outlined the surprising number of ways in which God Of War is a lot like Shrek. Heck, if you look closely it could almost be a shot-for-shot remake!

Barlog swiftly responded, writing that he asked Sony if he could remake Shrek as a "violent Norse drama", and that when they said no he decided to do it anyway.

Just to clarify for any humour-impaired readers out there, Barlog is joking. At least, he claims to have been joking. The more I think about it, the less sure I am that Kratos' last adventure wasn't inspired by the famous green ogre.

If God Of War Ragnarok involves a giant gingerbread man or a single bar of 'Funky Town' by Lipps Inc., we'll know for sure. In the meantime, could somebody please edit Smash Mouth's 'All-Star' over the top of God Of War's opening scene to see how it lines up?
