Assassin's Creed Star Ezio Auditore Voted Gaming's Greatest Character

Beware of an old man in a profession where men usually die young.

Ask any gamer who their favorite Assassin's Creed character is, and most will tell you that it's Ezio Auditore. The protagonist of Assassin's Creed II was an instant hit when Ubisoft introduced him to the world back in 2009, and it's not hard to see why.

While a dozen or so Assassins have come and gone in the years since Ezio's thrilling debut, it's fair to say that none have ever really come close to snatching his crown. Kassandra of Assassin's Creed Odyssey might have come the closest, but our Ezio also has the benefit of a saga spanning multiple games. People got to connect with Ezio, seeing him grow from reckless youngster into a deadly and wise Assassin.

It probably won't come as much of a shock, then, that Ezio recently dominated a GAMINGbible poll to find the most popular video game protagonist of all. The cheeky chappy beat out competition from the likes of Agent 47, Geralt Of Rivia, Lara Croft, Jill Valentine, and Arthur Morgan. There were some hard-won battles, to be sure, but Ezio did what he does best and charmed his way to the top of the pile.

The final round came down to Ezio and Kratos, in an epic battle... or as epic as an Instagram poll can be, visually speaking. The God Of War star didn't stand a chance against the Assassin, however. Fans of Kratos can at least console themselves with the knowledge that if it was an actual fight and not a popularity contest, he would have snapped Ezio like a dry twig.

I guess the moral of the story is that if you didn't star in a trailer as sick as the Assassin's Creed Brotherhood E3 reveal, you might as well give up and go home. Here's hoping we get to see Ezio play a prominent role in one of Ubisoft's upcoming Assassin's Creed Netflix shows. The people have spoken, after all, and Ezio is officially the GOAT.
