An Elder Scrolls Netflix Series Is Reportedly In Development

It might have been a fair old while since 2011's Skyrim, but The Elder Scrolls franchise remains one of the most beloved and revered series of RPGs in history - one whose future is the subject of near-constant speculation, wishlists, and fan demands. But while the fans wait patiently for any scraps of news on The Elder Scrolls VI they can get, it seems Bethesda has other irons in more unexpected fires.

According to a new report from TV and film industry insider Daniel Ritchtman (via Game Rant), Bethesda is working with streaming giant Netflix to bring its iconic RPG franchise to the small screen, bringing the world and stories of Tamriel to life in live-action. Ritchtman also suggests that Netflix wants the series to be just as popular as its 2019 adaptation of The Witcher, which... yeah. I'd be more surprised if they were developing a series that they didn't want to be popular.

Take this report with a pinch of salt for now, as we haven't heard anything on the matter from Bethesda or Netflix. Such a series definitely isn't impossible, given Netflix has established itself as able to produce epic video game adaptations like Castlevania. The company also has multiple Assassin's Creed projects in the works, and more than one Resident Evil series. The Elder Scrolls would be a no-brainer.

My only real reservation springs from the fact that earlier this year, Bethesda announced it would be working with Amazon Prime to develop a Fallout TV series. I'm not 100% convinced that Bethesda would take one of its biggest franchise to one streaming service and then saunter over to that streaming service's biggest rival with its other, arguably even bigger IP.

It's certainly not out of the question that The Elder Scrolls is being developed for TV, then... I'm just not certain that Netflix is the one developing it. Watch this space.
