Gamers Are Dumbfounded by $70 Mobile Game: “I’m Incredibly Excited To Not Pay That”

That's $70 *minimum* by the way

Gamers are perplexed by a publisher’s decision to launch their mobile port for $70, especially considering that’s pretty much what you’d end up paying for the game on consoles anyway.

I understand that there are folks out there willing to drop their entire life savings on mobile games. Gacha games and microtransaction-laden slop are prevalent on mobile, and some people simply have more money than sense.

However, free-to-play games with microtransactions are very different from one-time purchases. When a game is ported from console to mobile, you’re expecting to pay a bit less for what is essentially an inferior experience (regardless of how impressive said port may be).

That’s probably why people are confused as to why the new iOS port of Hitman: World of Assassination costs seventy whole bloody dollars– which is almost exactly what you’d pay if you purchased the game on PS5, Xbox or Steam.

As detailed in an article by Gamespot’s Eddie Makuch, the new mobile port of the game is free to download and will let you play through the first location in the game. After that, however, you’ll have to either pay $69.99 for the entire experience, or drop $3 per level.

That means that the $70 price tag is technically discounted, because buying all 25 levels separately would cost you $75. That’s not even taking into account that this game also has a bunch of DLC, the majority of which do not seem to be included in the “full” game and cost $9.99 each.

Over on the r/gaming subreddit, folks are reacting to the news exactly how you’d expect they would (by mercilessly making fun of it).

“I’m incredibly excited to not pay that”, commented user 133DK.

“It costs nothing (it's free) if you don't buy the game. Follow me for more tips on how to save money!” replied user Ric_Rest.

“I wonder how many takers it will get at that price. Even if it's just sold in piecemeal chunks it probably won't be a huge financial success”, commented user TheKingMonkey.

I’m going to hazard a guess that, much in the same way that they did with the Resident Evil ports, Apple is probably paying the devs a tidy sum to port Hitman: World of Assassination to mobile.

However, that just shifts my confusion onto Apple instead of the publisher. Surely this is just losing them money in the long run, because there is absolutely no way that the sales will outweigh the development costs at that kind of price.

If you lot are really that desperate for a good mobile game, just get Slay the Spire. It’s like ten dollars, and you’ll easily get hundreds of hours out of it. Also it’s way better than any Hitman game (but that isn’t entirely fair to Hitman, considering Slay the Spire is basically the best game ever made).
