PlayStation 6 Handheld Sounds Suspiciously Like a Nintendo Switch 2

Are we calling this a Playtendo or a Ninstation?

According to a recent leak, Sony is planning to take a leaf out of Nintendo’s book for their upcoming console… and they also might be planning to do the same with an Xbox Series S competitor, too.

Leading up to the launch of the Nintendo Switch 2, the leaks were absolutely brutal.

Someone at Nintendo clearly had very loose lips, because in retrospect we knew everything about their latest console before they even officially revealed it.

It seems like the leakers have set their sights on Sony this time though, as we just received a bunch of details about three different PlayStation 6 consoles. And no, before you ask, that’s not a typo– because apparently three separate versions of the next-gen system are on the way.

According to a series of leaks detailed in a video by Moore’s Law is Dead, Sony is planning to release a standard PlayStation 6, a “PlayStation 6 S” (that is a cheaper, Xbox Series S-style version of the same console) and a PlayStation 6 handheld (which comes with a dock, allowing you to use it with a monitor).

So how do PlayStation gamers feel about all this? Not great, apparently.

Over on the r/GamingLeaksAndRumours subreddit, most of the comments think that this three-tiered strategy would be a terrible idea, if it’s true.

“Maybe its just me but If Sony releases a PS6, a PS6s (akin to the series S) and a PS6 portable isnt that going to be extremely convoluted for the average consumer?” commented user Chewbacca319.

“If this is true and the PS6 portable is dockable I dont see why a PS6s needs to exist.”

“If this is just a Switch 2 but more powerful, more expensive and with PlayStation's games then idk how much or a success it will be”, replied user sonicfonico.

“They did the "Nintendo but with more power" handheld 2 times. The first was a success on his own but far far far away from the DS. The second one straight up flopped… I hope Sony is creating this expecting it to be a pretty niche device. Even with the similar price to the Switch 2.”

Considering that general consumers took a long time to wrap their heads around the difference between an Xbox Series S and an Xbox Series X, I can see where they’re coming from.

That being said, I don’t think it’s a terrible idea– especially where the budget version of the PS6 is concerned. People are spending less at the moment, and people are going to be far less likely to drop a bunch of money on a new console as a result.

On paper, I think Sony could be onto something here. We’ll have to see if it all pans out when these release though (which is hopefully in the very distant future).
