A Game Boy Version Of ‘Elden Ring’ Is Being Made, And It Looks Just As Hard

It's a very different interpretation of the Lands Between, but a Game Boy version of Elden Ring is certain to be just as difficult.

Defeating Elden Ring is an admirable achievement, and no easy feat. True, more people have platinumed the game than you’d think but anyone who rolls credits on FromSoftware’s latest title - platinum or not - has my respect.

Since its release, Elden Ring has spawned a number of interesting mods and by interesting, I mean weird. If there’s one thing Elden Ring players and modders have in common, it’s their abundance of creativity. There’s NSFW nude mods, Tekken mods, a Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas mod … the list goes on. Shrek, Homer Simpson, and Will Smith have all blessed the Lands Between with their presence. The latest Elden Ring mod though is actually very cool - a rarity within the cacophony of weird.

Don't believe me? Take a look at some of Elden Ring's unique mods for yourself.

Twitch streamer shintendoTV is remaking, or rather demaking, Elden Ring for the Game Boy using G.B Studio 3.0. If that piques your interest, you can watch the whole process unfold on Twitch as shintendoTV is livestreaming the project.

The creator released a short preview clip teasing what we can expect from the project. Based in the Limgrave region, the clip shows the game’s opening boss fight and the player dodging and attacking the big bad. The clip ends in the infamous ‘You died’ screen, which I think it’s fair to say is something that all Elden Ring players are well acquainted with.

ShintendoTV doesn’t yet know the scope of the project but hopes to “finish [the] Limgrave area by the end of May.” At that stage, they plan to make the game available for download which should work on real Game Boy hardware. Elden Ring is a stressful game, for a pathetic Tarnished like me anyway, but there’s something calming about the Game Boy. I for one would love to explore a pixelated Lands Between.
