While it may not be as popular as its more modern entries, the original Fallout from 1997 still remains one of the most influential CRPGs of all time.
Considering plenty of RPGs up until that point were largely rooted in Tolkien-style fantasies or intergalactic sci-fi settings, having one set on Earth after a nuclear apocalypse was a rather novel idea for the time.
Over the years, the Fallout series has shifted from an isometric game into first-person action RPGs, and some fans are hopeful the series may eventually return to its roots.
Thanks to an upcoming fan mod, you may at least be able to experience the best of both worlds.

'Fallout: Bakersfield' is a new mod for GZDoom that aims to remake the original Fallout game using Doom’s sourceport engine.
The intention behind the mod is for Fallout to be recreated as a first-person shooter using Doom’s mechanics and 2.5D sprites, while still retaining that classic Fallout aesthetic.
Six minutes of new footage have now been released by the mod’s developer, giving us a little look at what the total conversion looks like.
The video showcases off some combat and exploration, where the player explores some post-apocalyptic ruins and fights a few ghouls. We also get a look at the HUD, which looks inspired by the original game.

It’s cool to see the original Fallout character face panel on the HUD too, along with the iconic green log messages. All-in-all, 'Fallout: Bakersfield' is probably the best way to bring the classic Fallout into an FPS environment without doing a full-blown remake.
There’s no word on when 'Fallout: Bakersfield' will see a public release. As it stands, the game is around 60% complete according to the developer after an initial reveal last month.
So, there’s still a bit of a way to go, but the mod should be closer to completion by 2027.
