Fallout meets Dying Light in new open-world RPG

Monsters, forests, and guns, oh my!

Are open-world RPGs your bread and butter, to the point that you’ll forsake other genres in favour of these expansive universes? If you answered yes, you’ll want to keep up with the latest news about an upcoming RPG that is best described as Fallout meets Dying Light.

Picture decayed creatures, lurching towards you as you try to traverse the landscape, an eclectic mix of factions vying for supremacy, and in between it all is you. Sounds terrifying, yet thrilling. This is what awaits those who play Pioner, an MMORPG from GFA Games, a relatively new developer with no other titles to its name. Yet despite not having other games to call its own, the snippets we’ve seen of Pioner look impressive.

Take a look at Pioner in action below.

This game is all about survival, as its dedicated website reiterates. Survival depends not only on skill alone but also on the range of weapons you’re able to find, which, looking at gameplay, there’ll be a decent selection of. As much as I see the Fallout and Dying Light connection, I’d also describe Pioner as a The Witcher-esque FPS, minus the magic.

As with many new games, from official titles to fan-made concepts like the stunning GTA IV remaster, Pioner utilises Unreal Engine 5. Even if the story-driven missions don’t tick all the right boxes for you, we’d be surprised if the graphics didn’t entice you – they look really solid, crisp, and pretty realistic. Not to mention it sounds like it has a strong soundtrack, which is always a winner in our book.

Currently, there’s no firm release date for Pioner other than a generic 2023 label. Seeing as how there are not many months left before we’re seeing in the new year, GFA Games need to get a wiggle on if it's to make that timeframe. Should it miss the intended 2023 launch, this will be the second delay the game has experienced thus far, with its original 2022 launch easily missed after Tencent acquired some shares in the company.
