Fallout 5 leaves fans torn as game springs from ashes of cancelled project

It's unfortunate timing

Fallout 5 has reportedly been “fully greenlit” which, fair to say, is something many of us assumed happened years ago.

This update was delivered by Jez Corden on the Xbox Two Podcast so I have to urge you to take it with a pinch of salt; that being said, Corden has a decent track record.

The insider said that he didn’t know who was developing the game given that Bethesda was busy with The Elder Scrolls VI and Starfield’s next DLC expansion.

As I said, most of us assumed this title was greenlit years ago which says to me that Fallout 5 is even further away than we originally thought.

I assumed that at least a skeleton crew might’ve been beavering away on the project for the past couple of years, prepping it for full development in a few years time, but apparently not if it’s only just been greenlit.

It’s hard not to ignore the fact that Fallout 5 has supposedly been greenlit just as ZeniMax’s unannounced MMO project was cancelled, as pointed out by Techtroduce, although the two are not believed to be linked; it’s just bad timing.

It makes you wonder whether ZeniMax could assist with early development on Fallout 5 in partnership with Bethesda Game Studios.

I must admit, it seems unlikely, especially when Obsidian has a great history with Fallout.

The main consensus from fans at this stage is mixed.

While any Fallout 5 update is going to be heartily welcomed, this is one tinged with those several disappointing caveats.

“While I’m thrilled for another Fallout, I’m honestly shocked this hasn’t been in at least pre-development for years,” wrote Reddit user baltimoresports. “Fallout 4 was a massive hit when came out in 2015 and they are just now starting on the sequel 10 years later? Seems strange this wasn’t a priority.”

“Hooray we’ll be eating good in 2042,” added Quick-Half-Red-1.

“While Fallout 5 being greenlit is heaven, sacrificing another developer's game sets a dangerous precedent,” commented conrat4567.

It’s certainly a worryingly unstable time for the industry.
