Elder Scrolls: Morrowind Free Fan Remaster Has Us Craving The Real Thing

It's like a whole new game

It's been a whole 14 years since the release of The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim and I think may soul may have withered away waiting for the next one.

Though it was announced some seven years ago at E3 in 2018, we've heard very little about Bethesda’s proposed sequel in the time since. Todd Howard did break cover the other day to do an interview with GQ and he confirmed that the game is still some way away, with most placing a release some time in 2028/2029. He may even shadow drop it.

All of that said, we need something to do in the meantime, and there's still a ton of fun to be had playing the older games in the series. For many, the peak still remains with the third game in the series, Morrowind, and a new remaster is giving us a great reason to go back once again.

Morrowind in Unreal Engine 5 Remaster

Though the story is one of the best in the series, Morrowind's visual are a bit of a different proposition, and the original version of the game has really begun to show its age, which could be jarring for some.

Fortunately, there's a very 2025 solution for that problem thanks to a remaster for the game made in Unreal Engine 5, and the really cool news is that you can play it right now.

Over on YouTube, Digital Dreams shared a gameplay showcase of this version of Morrowind, and it looks pretty exceptional.

All of the engine's hallmarks are there, so you'll see everything from much more convincing water effects to better lighting and more realistic foliage.

Now, the game was obviously originally released in 2002, so this remaster doesn't suddenly make it look like a new game or add quite a complete a package as the official remaster Bethesda put out for Oblivion, but it's a sterling effort and one that you should definitely try if you're a fan.

The comments were also very excited, with one saying, "It's NOSTALGIA! It's so beautiful, so perfect the song such classic reminding me of my younger past when I was 11."

"Just like I remember it. Still time before Christmas, but I'm already getting an itch for a replay," another added.

The full map and asset port are available to download by joining the creator, Greg Coulthard's, Discord, with the link in the description of the video.
