The Elder Scrolls 6 Is Playable, Todd Howard Drops Milestone Update

Another tiny step closer to completion

The Elder Scrolls VI is about to pass a major internal milestone, Todd Howard has confirmed.

The only problem is that we’re still in the dark as to what that milestone is.

In a recent appearance on the KindaFunny podcast, Todd Howard was once again grilled on the status of the highly anticipated follow-up to Skyrim.

“We're able to play it,” he said. “We're about to pass a big milestone internally, the majority of the studio is on the game and some of our partners."

If you’re feeling joy and elation, let me also add that he then reiterated that the game is “still a long way off”.

Specifying “a long way off” certainly makes me think it could be upwards of two years before The Elder Scrolls VI ever sees the light of day.

You have to wonder what that internal milestone is. I wonder if development is almost complete on the main story missions?

Elsewhere in the interview, Howard confirmed that The Elder Scrolls VI is being made in Creation Engine 3.

Starfield, for comparison, was made in Creation Engine 2, so we should expect a graphical step-up this time around.

The Elder Scrolls VI Will Bring Back Skyrim’s Classic Formula

I’m pleased to hear that. I was a fan of Starfield, but I do think it felt graphically outdated.

The Elder Scrolls VI is also set to feature more of a classic Elder Scrolls feel.

Howard described Starfield and Fallout 76 as a “creative detour” for the studio.

“We do have a certain style that we like and that our fans like that we want to get better and better at,” he explained.

“I think in some ways Fallout 76 and Starfield are a little bit of a creative detour from that classic Elder Scrolls, Fallout, a Skyrim or a Fallout 3 or a Fallout 4, Oblivion, where you're exploring a world in a certain way.

“And as we come back to Elder Scrolls VI that we're doing now, we're coming back to that classic style that we've missed, that we know really really well."

This is all very comforting, but it doesn’t exactly make up for the continued wait we’re enduring that won’t end any time soon.

As a consolation, Starfield news is expected soon.

Howard debunked rumours of a 2.0 overhaul, instead confirming that new content is on the way.

“So for expectation-setting, it's the kind of thing where if you love Starfield, we think you're going to love this,” he explained.

“It's updates and things that change the game, not in an isolated way, but sort of meta, using outer space and things in ways that we haven't.

"But look, if Starfield is something that didn't connect with you right away, or you bounced off it or found it boring in places, I don't think this is going to change that fundamentally."

I’ll definitely be checking out whatever comes our way.
