Elden Ring Nightreign free update finally adds long-awaited duos mode

No more third wheels

Elden Ring Nightreign is finally getting its long-awaited duos mode, and there’s even a release date for the free update.

FromSoftware’s Elden Ring sequel released earlier this year, putting the focus on co-op and roguelike mechanics more than the original.

With the game requiring players to group up in teams of three if they wanted to play co-operatively, it left a lot of two-person groups in the dirt who couldn’t access the mode without a full trio.

It’s a problem GAMINGbible’s own Sam Cawley highlighted in our review of Elden Ring Nightreign, writing: “You’d rather play with people you know, right? It’s not a dealbreaker by any means but it is a confusing design choice.”

Thankfully, for those who aren’t lucky enough to have two friends with schedules that all align, FromSoftware has now revealed when exactly it will be letting duos play the game in a new free update.

As announced by FromSoftware, duos mode will be coming to Elden Ring Nightreign in patch 1.02 on 30th July, 2025, allowing you and a friend to explore Limveld without a third wheel.

There’s even a nifty little trailer to celebrate the patch, which you can watch below.

In addition to this, patch 1.02 adds new quality of life UI (user interface) improvements, such as having new filtering options for Relics in the inventory menu.

It sounds like Elden Ring Nightreign’s biggest issue may be about to be circumvented, in that case.

The game has otherwise received lots of positive critical acclaim, with the PS5 version attaining a 77% on Metacritic.

As our Sam put it: “It’s not perfect, and it nowhere near has the level of polish that Elden Ring did, but you can tell it’s not really trying to be what that game was. It’s a different animal entirely and I can admire FromSoftware for trying something new while still holding onto what’s worked for it in the past.”
