Hollywood sure is interested in video games at the moment. A wide array of TV and film adaptations are in the works including HBO’s The Last of Us series, Netflix’s Horizon Zero Dawn prequel series, and Prime Video’s God of War series. Ghost of Tsushima, the Metal Gear Solid series and Minecraft are also all being adapted. You get the idea, right? There’s a lot.
I don’t want to jump the gun, but I get the feeling that we’re seeing a shift in the quality of video game adaptations. This year’s Sonic The Hedgehog 2 has gone on to become the most successful video game adaptation of all time and based on what we’ve seen of The Last of Us series, it so far seems to authentically capture the essence of the game. With so much in the pipeline you may be thinking, what else is prime for adaptation? Duke Nukem apparently.

A Duke Nukem film is officially in the works from Netflix’s Cobra Kai creators Josh Heald, Jon Hurwitz and Hayden Schlossberg. The film will be produced by Legendary Entertainment (who were also behind Dune and Jurassic World) and Marla Studios. Marla Studios is headed up by ex-Ubisoft dev Jean-Julien Baronnet and the studio specialises in video game adaptations. I say ‘specialises,’ they previously worked on the 2016 Assassin’s Creed film so make of that what you will.
Hopefully, this Duke Nukem film will finally see the light of day as the character hasn’t had the best of luck in the past. A film adaptation was first announced in the 1990s but was later cancelled due to a lack of funding. Plans then arose again in 2001 to no avail, and later in 2008 and 2017. In 2018, a film finally started to take shape after John Cena was cast in the lead role but guess what? Yeah, it never happened.
The question now is, who will play this iconic hero? I’m sure the fan casts will soon be popping up.
