Who here remembers Dino Crisis? Not Capcom, apparently. The survival horror series, which was developed by the same team as Resident Evil, first landed on the PlayStation in 1999, with the first game following a special operations agent called Regina sent to investigate a secluded island research facility overrun with dinosaurs. I wonder where they got that idea from?
Anyway, despite the series seeing a further four (mostly) well received instalments up to 2003, all had basically gone quiet until January last year, when Capcom filed for a new trademark - an online multiplayer game in the Dino Crisis franchise. Great! Except it’s not, because it’s already been abandoned.
If you like Dino Crisis, you might love its spiritual successor, Instinction, set to release in 2022. Check out the trailer below!
The trademark was for an online game, which included the possibility of an online multiplayer game on mobile and handheld devices. As of August this year though, it seems that idea has been completely shut down - Capcom supposedly applied for multiple extensions, but failed to present any evidence that they’d actually started using the trademark. Boo.

It’s not all bad news though - a much older trademark, originally filed three months before the release of the first game in 1999, was renewed in November for another 10 years. So hopefully that means that they’re still thinking about the franchise? Maybe? Obviously, it could just be to protect the IP, but that doesn’t make for fun speculation, does it?
But seriously, the concept of a new instalment in the series wouldn’t be completely out of the way. In fact, back in December 2017, an official Capcom Twitter account replied to one fan asking if there could be a new Dino Crisis, saying “If a lot of people wish”. Mysterious!
In the meantime, we can always look forward to Instinction - a spiritual successor to Dino Crisis by Hashbane Interactive, set to release next year on PC, PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S.

In a press release, Hashbane Interactive said: "A dinosaur survival game with modern mechanics and a compelling story, after 20 years waiting we had no choice but to make one ourselves, and it had to be amazing so as to pay homage to the original, with full mod support for the community!"
So, at least you know you’re going to get your dinosaur fix one way or another next year, just maybe not in the way we hoped. It’s still something though, right?
