A brutal new release for Cyberpunk 2077 titled GoreRunner does exactly as it says on the tin, and it’s currently making the rounds online.

Cyberpunk 2077 is one of those games that absolutely thrives off its fan-made custom content. Sure, the base game and its DLC is already incredibly expansive, but the modding potential elevates it to new heights.

Fans are doing everything from adding brand new gameplay features, to expanding the map with new areas to explore. And this new mod is taking the game’s gore and blood effects to the next level.

GoreRunner for Cyberpunk 2077 introduces a load of new gibbing effects to the game, as well as enhancing the blood and gore that is currently featured.

Cyberpunk 2077 was already a pretty violent game, but seeing this takes it to a whole new level. Mod creator Cazanu was apparently inspired by the “over the top gore of Cyberpunk: Edgerunners”.

As described by Cazanu, GoreRunner includes “exploding heads, flying chunks of brain, meat, bones, intestines, livers, kidneys — enemies torn apart by grenades, shotguns, or katanas,” as well as “more exposed ribs, brutal headshot flaps, and deeper wound detail.” Well then.

It also features a new dynamic blood splatter system, which Cazanu apparently built from scratch with over 70 unique new splatters that have been randomised according to weapon type, direction, and hit location.

“Small calibers create fine sprays, Big calibers cause dense splashes, Katanas leave initial slice trails then spatters all over,” as the mod description continues. “Limbs chopped off bleed out with continuous trails while wounded limping enemies leave a trail of blood droplets.”

Considering the rather cartoonish-ness that is introduced as part of this mod, Cazanu has acknowledged how it goes against the style of the original game, writing: “Yes it’s over the top, this isn't a realistic mod, it’s supposed to add into the game the over the top almost comical violence from the anime.”

The creator has acknowledged that the mod still includes a few bugs and glitches, including one where some gibs slide slowly on shiny floors, and another where some splatters become “overly stretched”. However, they have expressed their intention to look into these bugs and attempt to fix them in further updates.

You can download GoreRunner for Cyberpunk 2077 now on PC. The mod should work across Steam, Epic Games, and GOG copies of the game. You can download it from Nexus Mods here.
