Many of the greatest games ever made are blueprints, serving as the sandbox foundation that can be expanded upon by creative players.
Take Skyrim, for example. It's a stellar game in its own right, but it truly shines with elaborate mods that are still being rolled out and developed today.
Others accidentally become great through fantastic gameplay bedded with some quirky characters that lean into meme culture.
Game of the Year winner Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is the epitome of that, as a beautiful wonderland bursting with life, funky characters, and an emotional story. It was never intended to be the RPG that would revolutionise the gaming industry, but it erupted in 2025 and has leaned into its flaws to avoid being cliché.

Yet with some games arriving soon that are a decade in the making, if not longer, the Clair Obscur creator has claimed that these 'perfect' games won't have the wonky features that his famed title did, and will be 'boring' as a result.
With games like The Elder Scrolls 6 and Grand Theft Auto IV trying to push the boundaries of video game production with elaborate masterpieces, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 creative director Guillaume Broche said that 'games that try to be perfect' often end up being 'really boring.'
"You see their flaws, and you think to yourself, 'Yeah, it's lame, but I don't care,'" Broche said on a Konbini YouTube podcast.

"Games that try to be perfect, that try to fix all their flaws – they're usually just really boring.
"My theory is that it's just like people. People who try to be perfect are boring because they have no personality. Whereas people who embrace their slightly weird side – in the end – are the interesting ones."
The director noted many areas of Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 that he thought were full of wonk, such as the 'unbearable' mini games, a wild power curve in Act 3 that can leave you 'absurdly strong', and the fact that you can actually just speedrun the main story without exploring most of the content.
"Who cares? It's just funny. That's what we love about it. The imperfections are part of the charm."
This has been a fear for The Elder Scrolls 6, specifically, as many players have voiced concerns that the game will try so hard that it won't leave much space for entertaining mods and memes - we all love Skyrim for 'hey, you're awake' and 'I took an arrow to the knee,' and the same can be said for Oblivion's funny-looking annoying boy.
Thankfully, GTA has surpassed the test of time in different ways, such as its role-playing Online community, which will undoubtedly be even better with a bigger base game to go off.
Just don't forget the flaws, guys, they're the best bit.
