Capcom teases revival of older IPs, Devil May Cry and Dead Rising most wanted renewals

Capcom has teased a revival for some of its older IPs, with fans hopeful it could lead to new entries for franchises like Devil May Cry and Dead Rising.

Although most associated with franchise giants like Monster Hunter, Resident Evil, and Mega Man, Capcom has proven its willingness to revive some of its older IPs with brand new entries, as evidenced by this month’s release of Onimusha: Way of the Sword.

The company has also confirmed that Onimusha: Way of the Sword hit one million copies sold in the first day of release, driving sales of the entire franchise above 10 million units.

Aside from the fact that it's been released during an incredibly busy month, what is particularly impressive is that Onimusha: Way of the Sword is the first game in the series since Onimusha: Dawn of Dreams was released twenty years ago in 2006, showing that this success has been driven not necessarily by the name of the franchise, but rather by the Capcom brand itself.

Capcom has been the king of the mid-budget AAA game for a long time. Experimental titles like Exoprimal and Pragmata have found their audience, while franchise IPs like Resident Evil and Monster Hunter have proven to be excellent focused experiences that release within a reasonable timeframe.

The developer has also gone on record many times before saying how interested it is in reviving many of its older IPs that have barely been touched in recent years, and the success of the latest Onimusha game as well as recent Resident Evil remakes prove that it’s what the fans seem to want.

“In addition to regularly releasing major new titles each year, Capcom is focusing on re-activating IPs that haven’t had a new title launch recently. The company is working to further maximise corporate value by leveraging its rich library of content, including this title,” it said in the latest press release.

Dead Rising and Devil May Cry new entries are just two of many Capcom IPs fans want revived

Naturally, this has led to some speculation surrounding what the next Capcom revival could be. Fans on Reddit have discussed the possibilities, with franchises like Dead Rising and Devil May Cry being named as some of the most wanted for a revival.

“I know they recently did the Dead Rising 1 remake, but I really hope to see a new entry eventually,” reads one comment on Reddit. “And not just a remake of an older game, I need the taste of Dead Rising 4 out of my mouth.”

“Dead Rising needs a Devil May Cry: ignore the terrible game, bring it back in-house,” reads another comment.

“You can't tell me a modern Dino Crisis or even a remake wouldn't at least do well enough to not justify making it. Dinosaurs are underused, AND everyone loves Capcom; combine the two again, I think a lot of people who aren't even familiar with the franchise would be keen,” a third comment reads.

Fans also list franchises like Breath of Fire, Lost Planet, and Viewtiful Joe as potential candidates they’d like to see revived.

Following Onimusha: Way of the Sword, Capcom will be bringing back Mega Man and Okami with new releases in the future. Mega Man: Dual Override is coming in 2027, while Okami 2 has no set release window yet.
