In terms of cancelled game projects we’d most like to see, GTA 5’s single-player DLC is probably up towards the top of that list.
Originally planned for release in GTA 5’s first year of post-launch content, the single-player DLC expansions were allegedly going to be on the same length as The Lost and Damned or The Ballad of Gay Tony episodes from GTA 4. However, they did not come to be.
Although there was never an official announcement about a cancellation, it was later revealed that Rockstar’s increased focus on GTA Online and Red Dead Redemption 2 led to DLC plans being binned. A new interview with Rockstar Games co-founder Dan Houser on the Lex Fridman Podcast has revealed another tidbit of information about the cancelled GTA 5 DLC.
The DLC, which had the working title of Agent Trevor, featured the fan-favourite character Trevor going on a series of missions working as an agent, presumably for the IAA.

According to Houser, the DLC was “cute”, but 'it was never finished' and 'was about half done when it got abandoned'.
It’s a shame that it never came to be, as Rockstar’s history with DLC expansions has been pretty damn good in the past. GTA 4’s two DLC episodes were arguably just as good, if not better, than the base game.
Then there was also the Undead Nightmare expansion for Red Dead Redemption, which was also great. However, the developer has not released any single-player DLC for its games since then.

On the other hand, Houser states that if Agent Trevor had been released, it would have taken resources away from Red Dead Redemption 2.
So, in the end I guess that wasn’t too bad of a compromise. Red Dead Redemption 2 is, after all, one of the most successful games of all time in terms of revenue and awards.

Will GTA 6 have single-player story DLC?
Still, it does raise some questions on whether the same will occur when GTA 6 releases.

With GTA 5 and Red Dead Redemption 2 not getting single-player DLC expansions and resources instead diverted to their online modes, it’s possible that the same could occur here when GTA 6 launches next year.
Hopefully the actual size and quality of GTA 6’s story will be sufficient for players, as it sounds like this could be all we get in terms of single-player content before the online component arrives.
