Call Of Duty 2022 Is A 'Modern Warfare' Sequel, Ties Into New 'Warzone'

Whether or not the single-player campaign will be taking us to South America remains to be seen.

Last night, Activision shed a little light on the future of Call Of Duty, confirming that the next entry will be a continuation of the Modern Warfare reboot released in 2019 and that there will be a "new Warzone experience" that has been designed concurrently with the new mainline game.

Surprise! This is very close to what industry insider Tom Henderson said about the series late last year, also adding that the campaign is inspired by Netflix's crime thriller show Narcos by pitting the player against Colombian drug cartels as an undercover special forces soldier. Henderson has a reliable track record, admittedly, and a deluge of other leaks about the game has caused some curiosity. Twitter user RalphsValve suggested that the next Call their injuries (for example, placing pressure on wounds, fleeing, or pleading for their life).

Understandably, Activision hasn't acknowledged any of the above leaks in this announcement, hence we shall take Tom's and RalphsValve's claims with a pinch of salt for the time being. "The new game and a new Warzone experience are designed together from the ground-up," explained Activision in a post to the Call Of Duty blog covering changes to Vanguard and Warzone. The two games will benefit from a new engine - likely an improvement to ensure that players on last-gen and new-gen consoles are able to make the most of what the game is offering irrespective of their chosen machine - and Infinity Ward is once again in charge of the development of Call Of Duty 2022 and the new Warzone.

It's difficult to drum up enthusiasm for the future of the series, though, considering the shocking controversies that have been circling Activision for the past couple of months. Microsoft's acquisition was certainly an intriguing choice, with Phil Spencer pledging that the takeover will "[extend] our culture of proactive inclusion to the great teams across Activision Blizzard" and that the "right" people will be placed in leadership positions.

"I am hoping we will see an exit from those that were involved with the original company, if not, I am afraid there is no redemption for me, for the victims,” said streamer TaurusPlaysTV when we asked players whether they would continue supporting Activision games after the acquisition is complete.
