Borderlands 4 is getting a big patch following the performance issues that have plagued the game in the first week of launch.
Gearbox Software launched Borderlands 4 last week to generally favourable reviews. While the game has been praised for its design choices and improved gameplay, it’s taken some flak for its apparent technical issues and poor performance, especially on PC.
Responding to this, Gearbox boss Randy Pitchford chimed in, telling players to “get a refund from Steam if you aren’t happy with it.”
Pitchford then stated that “every PC gamer must accept the reality of the relationship between their hardware and what the software they are running is doing,” seemingly placing the blame on the gamers rather than the game itself.

“If you tell me about your specification, I can help you optimize your performance,” he continued.
“I’m sorry you don’t like being told to use DLSS, but that is the way. If you’re not happy using the tools available to you to improve frame rate, and you’re not happy with the frame rate you have, you should play a different game.”
Well, it seems Pitchford may have admitted he was wrong about that, as Gearbox is putting out a big patch this week to address the various bugs and performance issues that Borderlands 4 players have been experiencing since last week.
According to a new post made on the company’s X (formerly Twitter) account, the company is prioritising “updates to improve stability and performance” for PC users, with another patch planned for today.

Gearbox is also testing an FOV slider to be implemented into the game, with more information on that “coming very soon on that”.
In the meantime, Gearbox has an “optimisation guide” for Nvidia users which is handy to look at if you have compatible hardware, as it might clear up some issues for you while you wait for subsequent updates to improve performance.
On Steam, Borderlands 4 has accrued a 65% positive review rating, indicating that the game has a “mixed” reception.
Looking through the reviews, a lot of players are saying that it’s fun, but that optimisation and performance is struggling, which impedes their ability to enjoy the game. Some players have current-generation graphics cards and CPUs released in the last year, and they’re struggling to even hit 60FPS.

Hopefully Gearbox is able to sort the issues soon, as there are clearly a lot of paying customers who aren’t happy with the end result.
