Set to be released in just under a month, Borderlands 4 is set to be the largest and most open-ended title in the franchise.
As the first mainline Borderlands entry in six years, Borderlands 4 is set to take the world by storm when it releases this September.
The fifth mainline entry is rumoured to be bigger and better than its predecessors with a “seamless” world, new vehicles and traversal tools such as the grappling hook.
However, it is the game’s weapons that have recently made headlines as Borderlands 4 is reported to feature 30 billion possible weapon combinations.

This news comes courtesy of an interview between Epic Games and Gearbox in which the developers revealed that the game’s 30 billion guns would greatly overshadow Borderlands 3’s one billion combinations.
Spread across around a dozen weapon brands, billions of combinations will be available to play around with in Borderlands 4 and so players will be able to access dozens of combinations to suit their playstyle.
To cater to the game’s large arsenal, Gearbox recently spoke about its idea to include a “gun map”.
"It was this really large gun map where you could see all of the individual parts for all the individual guns, for all the individual manufacturers,” art director Jimmy Barnett.

“It made it so you could see how each of those things were and how we could have those combinations roll together and how they would work--the slides, the animations, the actions, the art of it all fitting together.
"Because a certain gun...if it pumps one way, but there's a long barrel that goes on the bottom...obviously those parts can't go together."
Gunplay has always been a key feature of the Borderlands franchise and it seems as though Borderlands 4 is about to push this more than ever.
Borderlands 4 releases on September 12 2025 on PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC.
