Battlefield 6’s free mode has left fans feeling torn and we can understand why.
The next entry in the Battlefield series from Electronic Arts and DICE is expected to arrive at some point this year.
Unofficially labelled “Battlefield 6”, those in charge of the games production will be hoping it will get the long-running military shooter series back on track.
I’ve been a fan of the Battlefield series since the beginning and it has provided so many fond memories over the years, especially when it comes to its epic multiplayer modes. However, those fond memories feel like a lifetime ago.

The most recent entry in the series is Battlefield 2042, released in 2021, but to say this game was underwhelming, would be an understatement. For starters, it had no single player campaign, which turned off many of its loyal fans.
What’s more, not only did Battlefield 2042’s multiplayer maps feel empty and uninspired, it was full of exploits that players never gave a second thought to use, and it was missing loads of basic features such as a competent matchmaking system and leaderboards.
Granted, the maps, modes and features were improved upon following a series of content updates but for many, it was too little too late for most Battlefield fans.
Fans might consider Battlefield 6 to be a make or break situation for the series and in many respects, they’re not wrong. So, it’s paramount that when it launches, it hits the ground running.

One way that EA and DICE will be hoping to ensure Battlefield 6 is a success, is by releasing a free-to-play battle royale game, perhaps similar to Call of Duty: Warzone.
However, this wouldn't be the first time EA and DICE has released a battle royale mode. In 2019, ‘Firestorm’ was released in Battlefield V and simply put, it was dead on arrival.
Will Battlefield’s next attempt at battle royale be any different? Only time will tell, but fans remain understandably sceptical.

“I'll be happy if it's decent, but I have my doubts,” said The_Ferret_Inspector.
“Battlefield in my opinion has the best base gameplay for battle royale, and its destruction could breathe fresh air into the genre,” suggested z0l1.
“I know it's popular online to hate on any battle royale mode....but my personal natural reaction is ‘hell yeah’,” said an enthusiastic ctyldsley.

“Another battle royale, really?” bemoaned Carryneo. “People will try it, do a few games then never return. It's just a waste of devs' work and ressources.”
“Eww, enough with this trend chasing,” exclaimed SushiEater343. “Too many games forget what their strengths are.”
Hopefully, when the next Battlefield game does arrive, it gets the series back on track, because I’d love to see it.
