Battlefield 6 Free Download Issued by Accident, Players Angry

What will EA do next?

Battlefield 6 players are getting free Phantom Edition rewards for purchasing the Standard Edition, confusing and infuriating many.

The latest entry in the Battlefield series has smashed all expectations in terms of playercount and appeal, finally giving Call Of Duty a run for its money.

While Battlefield 6’s campaign fell a bit short, its multiplayer has been a lot of fun so far, though as expected, there are a few technical issues to speak of. This is something Electronic Arts is very aware of and has been vocal about addressing in the coming months through post-launch support and content updates.

One of the latest problems though is a bizarre one. Players purchasing Battlefield 6 could go for the Standard Edition of the game which just includes the game itself, or they could splash out a bit on the Phantom Edition for some bonus cosmetics for their characters.

Some Phantom Edition players reported difficulty in claiming their additional content though leading to EA posting a statement that read: “We’re looking into an issue that is preventing some players from receiving their in-game rewards from the Phantom Edition, the Open Beta rewards, as well as the Road to Battlefield 6 rewards. We will provide an update when the team has resolved the issue.”

Following this, players who owned the Standard Edition reported they could claim the Phantom Edition content, prompting a follow-up statement from EA community manager EA_Pulsar that read: “Thanks so much for flagging this! We’re looking into reports of Phantom Edition items appearing unlocked—please hold off on equipping them.”

The situation has prompted backlash from those who purchased the more expensive version of Battlefield 6, only to have that extra content made available to the masses anyway.

“Cool, so I spent an additional 20$ for something everyone has now for free,” read a comment in a thread sharing the news.

Others called for a refund for Phantom Edition owners, saying, “Great. Now EA can refund me the difference between the base game and phantom edition I paid extra for.”

It also raises the question of what’ll happen to those who grabbed the freebies while they were still available.

It sounds like EA will be removing them from your game if you don’t own the right version but I’d imagine that’ll cause even more backlash. After all, it’s not the fault of the players that those cosmetics were made publicly available.

This is a pretty big hiccup in what’s been a pretty successful launch for Battlefield 6, so it’ll be interesting to see what EA does next.
