Baldur’s Gate 3 was one of the best games of its year, but fans awaiting the next entry have been dealt blow after blow.
From Larian Studios saying it won’t be working on Baldur’s Gate 4 to Wizards of the Coast refusing to bring the popular 2023 CRPG to handheld systems, it seems that the future of Baldur’s Gate isn’t looking so hot.
While Larian works on delivering its upcoming Divinity sequel, which currently has a TBD release date, a new rumour suggests the next Baldur’s Gate adventure may not actually be far off.
PC Gamer reports that the next Baldur’s Gate adventure may actually be a remake of an earlier game (or games), with Wizards of the Coast reportedly looking at a remake of Baldur’s Gate 2 as the next release in the series.

PC Gamer also claims that a remake of the first game may also be on the cards, with former BioWare developer and Baldur’s Gate 2 co-lead designer Kevin Martens coming back to oversee things.
The rumour states that Martens is already working on the remakes of Baldur’s Gate 1 and Baldur's Gate 2, with PC Gamer’s source suggesting that both games are being made concurrently.
This would make sense, considering the second game follows on directly from the first one, plus their similarities in terms of writing, setting, and gameplay design.

It’s not clear what exactly will be changed with the new remakes compared to their originals. Both were remastered and re-released between 2012 and 2013 as enhanced editions, which came with visual improvements, new content, and additional features not seen in the originals.
However, this does beg the question of whether the remakes will play similarly to Baldur’s Gate 3. Considering they’re not made by Larian, I wouldn’t count on it. But stranger things have happened.
Either way, we’d imagine the changes made for the remakes will be done in an effort to bring over fans of Baldur’s Gate 3, which will also set them apart from the enhanced editions. Only time will tell.
Baldur’s Gate was first released in 1998 for PC, with an expansion pack titled Tales of the Sword releasing a year later. It received a second expansion in 2016, where the Enhanced Edition got an expansion titled Siege of Dragonspear.
This was followed by Baldur's Gate 2: Shadows of Amn in 2000, which takes place shortly after the events of the first game. Baldur’s Gate 2 then received its own expansion pack, Throne of Bhaal, in 2001.
The series wouldn’t receive a third entry until 2023 in the much-beloved Baldur’s Gate 3, but it did get two console spin-offs, Baldur’s Gate: Dark Alliance in 2001 and Baldur’s Gate: Dark Alliance 2 in 2004.
