Avatar: The Way Of Water smashes past $1 billion at the box office

A lot of people like Avatar. And I'll name them.

Avatar: The Way of Water zoomed past $1.1 billion at the box office in only 13 days, showing that the real "culturally irrelevant" characters were the ones on the keyboards.

If you're bewildered by this, join me in these mathematical calculations. I am 26 years old. James Cameron's Avatar came out in 2009, when I and a lot of other children were 13 years old. We thought it was really cool. Much like the fanbases for Star Wars, Top Gun and Jackass, to name a few examples, we'll go and see the new one even if we're all grown up now because it's a matter of nostalgia.

It's not just these 3D rose-tinted glasses though. The movie is gobsmackingly gorgeous. "Avatar: The Way of Water utterly redefines visual awe and wonder. It resets the bar so ridiculously high with entire sequences that leave you unsure where physical reality stops and CG begins," said Film School Rejects. I totally agree - personally speaking, I prefer my movies to have some sort of story and stakes that cause me to sit a little straighter in my chair after slithering down to a reclining position because I've been in the same seat for three hours straight. And a plot point that doesn't make the previous movie moot.

That being said, let the record show that I was here for every minute of Neytiri going beast mode on the attackers. I wouldn't pay to see just that scene again, but some fans have been to the theatres twice and even three times to savour The Way of Water. This, along with totals from countries like the UK, India and China, is pushing the newest movie to higher heights at the box office. If this carries on, it could triumph over Top Gun Maverick to become the highest grossing movie of the year, but it apparently has to see $2 billion in order to be fiscally successful.
