Avatar 2 is finally being knocked from the top box office spot

Avatar 2 is finally being knocked from the top box office spot

Avatar: The Way of Water has dominated the box office for eight weeks but its reign could end this weekend.

I’d imagine James Cameron has spent the last several months sitting there laughing at all of us who doubted him. We’ve all said it. Yes, Avatar was a major financial hit but it failed to make a deep cultural impression. Seemingly, being the highest-grossing film of all time is enough of a draw to also make your second film a whopping success.

I’m still not sure I know anyone that could name the characters from Avatar or Avatar: The Way of Water but I doubt Cameron cares. The Way of Water has raked in an incredible $2,118,261,024 at the box office making it the fourth highest-grossing film of all time. It also nabbed a ‘Best Picture’ nomination ahead of this year’s Academy Awards. This means that Cameron has directed three of the four most successful films ever made. The Way of Water’s box office reign could be coming to an end though, finally.

Take a look at the trailer for The Way of Water below to see what all the fuss is about.

The Way of Water has been holding on to the box office top spot for almost two months but it could soon be dethroned. As reported by Variety, Knock at the Cabin could soon usurp The Way of Water to claim the number one spot. Knock at the Cabin is the latest horror thriller from M. Night Shyamalan, who’s known for films including Split, Glass, and Old.

Based on the novel The Cabin at the End of the World by Paul Tremblay, the film follows a family of three who spend their vacation at a remote cabin. Suddenly, they’re taken hostage by four strangers who demand that someone has to be sacrificed in order to avert the incoming apocalypse. Spooky. The film stars plenty of familiar faces, including Dave Bautista, Jonathan Groff, and Rupert Grint.

Variety reports that Knock at the Cabin is expected to gross $15 to $20 million during its opening weekend. The Way of Water is now in its eight weekend and is predicted to make $11 million. I shouldn’t think James Cameron will be too disappointed at this stage. He’s made his point - and money.
