An Assassin’s Creed Unity mod proves why we need a game set during the Second World War.

Ubisoft’s Assassin’s Creed franchise is famous for taking place in a variety of timezones and locations, from Ancient Egypt to the pirate-infested Caribbean, meaning there are near limitless possibilities for where future games could be set.

With 11 games planned for the series over the next few years, fans have been going wild with theories over when and where future games could take place, and a recent mod for Assassin’s Creed Unity showcases why a game needs to take place during WW2.

The mod, posted in a YouTube video by Sliderv2, is a modified version of the WW2 Helix Rift segment of Assassin’s Creed Unity, which sees the game’s protagonist Arno scale the Eiffel Tower in 1944, whilst avoiding fire from an enemy plane. The unaltered level takes place at night, meaning you don’t see much of the surrounding area whilst making your ascent. The mod changes the level to daytime and adds more lighting effects, meaning you can really take in the wartorn city of Paris.

You can’t explore the surrounding area, only the linear path ahead of you, which is something fans are hoping to see changed in future instalments of the series, wholeheartedly believing a WW2 Assassin’s Creed game would be a perfect setting for the stealth genre.

“This would work for a setting. It would force everyone to go back to basics and emphasize stealth over combat (modern automatic and semiautomatic firearms). Assassination of officers was absolutely part of the war.”

“I really love this idea for AC. I always wondered what the Assassins and Templars were up to during WW1 and 2 and even more modern.”

“Were Ubisoft to make this, and do so properly, I believe it would be an amazing game. Perhaps this could be the turning point with which the Assassin's began to fall behind; perhaps due to modern technology becoming widespread.”

It’s currently anyone’s guess as to where future Assassin’s Creed games will be taking place. We know two games are confirmed to be set in Japan and China, and there’s speculation that Assassin’s Creed Hexe and Assassin’s Creed Invictus are set during the Salem witch trials and the Roman Empire respectively. Apart from those, it’s unknown where additional titles will take us, but one of the Great Wars should definitely be on the list.
