With the release of Assassin’s Creed Mirage now having passed, our attention turns to the upcoming Codename Red. Ubisoft’s next release is due to take fans to a location they’ve long wished to visit, Feudal Japan.

Whereas Mirage returned the Assassin’s Creed franchise to its stealthy roots, Codename Red is set to be the final instalment in the RPG strand of games, following in the footsteps of titles like Odyssey and Valhalla. We know that the game will feature a female shinobi and a male samurai, with concept art of the former recently leaking online. A report has also claimed that the samurai will be based on the real life figure of Yasuke, an African refugee who acted as a retainer and weapon-bearer to the Daimyo Oda Nobunaga. In a fresh tidbit, one insider now claims to have knowledge on Codename Red’s map too.

Take a look at the teaser trailer for Assassin’s Creed Codename Red below.

The leak comes courtesy of french-speaking YouTuber j0nathan, with the video translated and posted to Reddit by user Cygus_Lorman. Perhaps most notably, j0nathan teased that Codename Red will have a bigger map than Valhalla’s, uh oh. Let it sink in that Valhalla, according to HowLongToBeat, takes around 61 hours to roll credits, and 144 hours to reach full completion. We could be in for a stonker with Codename Red. Thankfully, it’s due to be a smaller map than Odyssey’s so it’s not the biggest we’ve had in the franchise.

Elsewhere in the video, j0nathan teased that the map will have fewer markers than previous instalments, encouraging exploration. It’s believed that players will be equipped with a grappling hook like in Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice and Ghost of Tsushima, whilst also having the ability to go prone and crawl through tall grass. It definitely sounds as if Codename Red will retain somewhat of an emphasis on stealth then alongside the RPG elements.

The YouTuber further added that players will be able to hide in shadows, extinguish torches, and there will be a new ‘spy system’. Naoi, the female shinobi, is thought to be equipped with kunai, shuriken, smoke bombs, and bells plus it’s expected that Ashigaru enemies will be armed with guns. J0nathan ended by saying that while Codename Red won’t have the same level of graphical fidelity as Star Wars Outlaws, it should be an improvement compared to previous games.

As always, this is a leak so do take it with an enormous pinch of salt. That being said, it all sounds very plausible and I’m hugely excited to see what Ubisoft has in store for us.
