Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced developer Ubisoft has confirmed that the open-world map in the upcoming remake has been overhauled.
Following months of rumours and leaks, Ubisoft officially confirmed that the remake of 2013’s Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag is real and it’s releasing in just over two months from now.
Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced will have improved visuals and performance, improved combat and stealth, new story missions, cinematics and more. All in all, it’s looking like a promising remake that we can’t wait to play.
One of the most fun aspects of the original Assassin’s Creed Black Flag is living the fantastic pirate life and sailing the seas as Edward Kenway on the Jackdaw. The huge open-world Caribbean map was as gorgeous on land with its tropical vibes as it was out on sea, waves splashing on your ship.
As picked up by ComicBook, during a Reddit AMA, when asked if the map in Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced will be bigger than the original, Ubisoft creative director Paul Fu said that the map will still be 16 square kilometres, but it will be a “little more dense, with new islands, and new locations nestled in the cities”.

While some may be disappointed with the map being the same size, in my opinion, that could be a very good thing. The reason being, as gorgeous as the original map is, and no matter how much of a joy it is to explore, it does have a lot of filler. So, if some of those filler locations are replaced by more meaningful content, that can only be a good thing.
Interestingly, game director Richard Knight, who was also taking part in the AMA, mentioned that the autopilot feature from previous games will return when on the Jackdaw, but warned players to pay close attention to the sea, because “you never know when an attack is coming”.
“Strike fear in your foes as you board and sink enemy vessels as Edward Kenway, captain of the Jackdaw. Whether blending into crowds or leading daring assaults, switch between silent takedowns and fierce brawls as you effortlessly wield swords, pistols, and the Hidden Blade,” reads the synopsis. “With a cast of historical pirate legends at your side, defy empires amidst the age-old conflict opposing Assassins and Templars.”
Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced will arrive on 9 July 2026 on PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S.
