Assassin’s Creed players are patiently waiting for Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced, a full-on remake of what many would consider the best game in the series.
It’s the first Assassin’s Creed game Ubisoft has remade from the ground up so there’s a lot of hype involved.
Amusingly though it’s not the only pirate game Ubisoft is currently supporting, as what was once described as a AAAA RPG is getting an entire year’s worth of content despite its abysmal player count.
Skull And Bones was initially believed to be the Assassin’s Creed Black Flag successor gamers had dreamed about but those dreams were quickly crushed when it was discovered the extent of the gameplay.
Years later though, the game is still being supported with new content as the Year 3 DLC roadmap was revealed yesterday.

It’s teased to be bringing “new content, new challenges, and a whole lot more waiting on the seas!”
Contents include new ships to sail on, like the Galleon, some new factions, trials, mods and much more. Also included is a wave of quality-of-life improvements like updates to UI, player progression and the amount of ships you can have in your party.
Some good stuff is on the way if you’re still playing the game but that’s exactly the problem: There are hardly any players left.
The all-time player count peak on Steam when the game launched was just over 2,000 players.
Over time, that playerbase has dwindled to a handful as only around 100-200 players are ever active on the game at any given time.
While this new roadmap of content could bring gamers back it’s highly unlikely, especially when Ubisoft is just a couple of months away from dropping Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced, the pirate game we’re really waiting for.
Gamers were quick to mock the new content roadmap too, with one comment replying “You could just DM them personally…” while sharing an image of the current player count.
Another comment said: “Just hire the dudes who made Windrose to fix your game lol. No one wants to be JUST a ship.”
It’s a shame because Skull And Bones did have potential; it just oversold itself with all the AAAA talk and the fact that you’re almost always stuck on your vessel made exploration meaningless.
Competition from other games hasn’t helped either, with emerging rivals like Windrose seeing critical and commercial acclaim where Skull and Bones underperformed.
Like Skull and Bones, Windrose was quickly deemed as a successor to Assassin’s Creed Black Flag and unlike Ubisoft’s other pirate game, it actually delivered on that expectation.
Windrose’s problem though is the lack of new content, as while free DLC is on the way, the developers have revealed it's a long way off.
Skull and Bones isn’t a bad game by any means but it’s a far cry from what fans were expecting, you’re better off just waiting for the Black Flag remake.
