Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced launched to a lukewarm reception last week, but for the most part impressions are good.
As the first remake in the Assassin’s Creed series it’s been quite successful, and Ubisoft have rewarded that success by laying off 51 of its workers. Yay.
Now the remake is great for those who’ve never set sail on the Jackdaw before, but it’s equally rewarding for those who played the original release, especially when all of the old tricks still work like a charm.
The in-game economy revolves around Edward and the crew of the Jackdaw taking down ships and stealing anything that isn’t nailed down.
This usually requires an intense naval battle, where you trade cannonballs with the opposing vessel until it’s ready to be boarded.

Doing so can be quite a risk as the ship can only take so much punishment, and if other ships arrive as backup you can quickly be overwhelmed.
To avoid taking a permanent nap at the bottom of the sea, you can steer the Jackdaw as close to an enemy ship as you can without crashing into them, and climb aboard.
From here you can start slashing away with your swords until you’ve efficiently reduced the crew’s morale. There’s often some side activities to do as well like cutting down the ship’s flag or exploding any barrels lying around.

This is an effective way of taking on more difficult ships, but it does have a few drawbacks to consider.
The first is you won’t have your crew climbing aboard to back you up. You’ll be fighting alone, which due to the remake’s new combat can make these encounters trickier than usual.
The second is this isn’t a traditional way of plundering ships, and as such you won’t get the traditional reward. When you’ve completed all the tasks you’ll have to jump off and swim back to the Jackdaw, upon which the ship explodes. You’ll still get some salvage, of course, but nowhere near as much as you would by taking it down normally.
You can still sneak onto enemy ships and take out the crew without ever doing any naval combat in Black Flag Resynced

This was one of the coolest ways to take out ships in the OG game and I am happy to confirm it is still in the remake! pic.twitter.com/NVKLy5TVPj
Nevertheless, this is just another tool in your arsenal for when the going gets tough, and we’re glad to see it’s still possible in the remake after being popularised in the original.
What we don’t yet know is if this trick will work on the legendary vessels. We don’t see why it wouldn’t, but you’d need to exercise caution as these are the hardest ships to plunder in the entire game. They’re even harder in the remake than they were in the original as well.
Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced is a solid remake, and a vast improvement in many areas. GAMINGbible awarded it a high score of 9/10, with our reviewer Richard saying: “One of the best Assassin’s Creed games gets even better.” It’s out now for Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 5 and PC.
