An artist has used Unreal Engine 5 to turn the city of Tokyo into a playable anime game, and there’s a demo you can play right now!

Unreal Engine 5 continues to impress gamers everywhere by generating some of the most astounding and photo-realistic graphics we’ve ever seen. While developers aim to use the engine to create fictional environments in future games, an artist called Yan Ru has used it to simulate Tokyo, and turn it into a playable anime.

Yan Ru shared a glimpse into what they’d been working on through a YouTube video on their channel, taking viewers through the very accurately portrayed city of Tokyo, mixing the real-life location with an anime aesthetic. Complete with anime billboards and other imagery, the demo provides a stunning environment to explore.

The best part? Interested players are more than welcome to download the demo for free and try it out for themselves, provided their PC can run it of course.

Commenters on the video unanimously agreed that the demo looks fantastic, saying: “This would be perfect as a vrchat world! amazing work as per usual”

One user, in particular, is excited for the future of anime-type games that use Unreal Engine 5, stating: “Stylized games look best with this engine!

“I would love future anime games to look like this. It would be awesome for Persona 6 to look like this with the updated turn-based battle presentation in Yakuza Like a Dragon.”

Unreal Engine 5 has seen more and more use since its release in April 2022 and has so far generated some incredibly advanced tech demos, such as the open-world BioShock concept trailer and the equally impressive GTA: Vice City 2 concept trailer.

We can’t wait to see what else is done with Unreal Engine 5 as it continues to push the boundary of graphics in video games.
