Whether you were a fan of the show or not, Andrew Lincoln and Norman Reedus' turns as Rick Grimes and Daryl Dixon in The Walking Dead turned them into some of the most recognisable characters and actors on the planet.

The two characters appeared across hundreds of episodes of the show between them and left a lasting legacy on the world of TV that even saw Dixon get his own spin-off, as well as showing up seemingly everywhere else.

That said, we don't get to see them as much as we used to, so it's now quite a nice little surprise when the pop up somewhere unexpected, which is exactly what has just happened in the world of video games, though don't worry, there are still plenty of zombies to contend with.

Rick Grimes, Daryl Dixon and More Confirmed For World War Z

In an official press release from developer Saber Interactive, Grimes, Dixon and several other characters from The Walking Dead were confirmed to be upcoming characters in co-op third-person shooter World War Z, with Andrew Lincoln and Norman Reedus retaining their roles as voice artists.

"Undead apocalypses collide like never before in World War Z x The Walking Dead DLC, a new campaign episode featuring three thrilling stories starring characters from AMC’s The Walking Dead – Rick Grimes, Daryl Dixon, Negan, and Michonne – with the voices of Andrew Lincoln and Norman Reedus reprising their fan-favorite characters," the statement reads.

"From the Prison to the Alexandria Safe Zone and Grady Memorial Hospital, you’ll fight to survive against new versions of World War Z’s infamous Zeke swarms inspired by The Walking Dead’s uniquely slower-moving but no less deadly Walkers."

Outside of the new story campaign set in the world of TWD, there are plenty of other gameplay additions to get excited about if you're a fan of the genre.

Those include three new chapters, four new playable characters, two new melee weapons and two weapon skins.

There also won't be any breaking of the lore here either, as the Zekes made famous by World War Z are replaced by the iconic Walkers that give The Walking Dead series its name. There is also a new, and even deadlier, foe to be aware of in the Spiked Walker, who are impervious to melee attacks until knocked down.

World War Z x The Walking Dead DLC will launch in January 2026 on PlayStation®5, PlayStation®4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, and PC via Steam and the Epic Games Store
