Survival games are everywhere right now and it's difficult to deny that they've tapped into some archaic part of our brains where we find gathering wood and building a fire, to make sure we don't freeze to death, extremely satisfying.
The other side of that coin is that competition is extremely fierce and there are a lot of very good examples of the genre, whether you're into hardcore survival games or more of a cosy experience without the smorgasbord of terrifying enemies.
Stiff opposition aside, Lost Rift is a new game from developer People Can Fly that's set to release into Early Access on Steam on 25 September. As described by the team behind it, Lost Rift "is a high-stakes First-Person Survival Adventure Shooter that brings together extensive base building, PvE quests, open-world survival crafting, and intense multiplayer PvPvE combat expeditions."
The game is designed to be played by up to five players (though solo also works, and is encouraged) and it looks to have some deep mechanics, as well as impressive execution in its main survival elements.

The premise sees you wash up on a beach known as Pioneers' Landing, which is just one small section of an extensive archipelago of islands. There, you'll be expected to make your first base camp, with many of the modular building elements available so you can truly make this first space your home.
This home will serve as both your fortress, and ideally your place of respite, as you seek to make it a tiny slice of paradise in an otherwise unforgiving world.
You'll be able to accumulate further resources by going on expeditions to specific locations or other islands to extract as much as you can. It's there that the combat comes into play, and there is definitely more of a focus on gunplay than we would usually see.
The setting is also looking like one of the game's most impressive features, with hurricanes, fire, lightning strikes and thick fog all present in a constantly changing dynamic environment. This should add another layer to the survival experience, beyond the usual staples of being hungry or thirsty.

Lastly, the game takes advantage of geo-located servers to ensure that your multiplayer experience should be relatively seemless.
As mentioned earlier, Lost Rift will be arriving in Early Access on Steam on 25 September with no specific timeline yet provided by the developer on when the game will hit its 1.0 version.
