GTA 6 release date, trailer, and everything we know so far

GTA 6 release date, trailer, and everything we know so far

Everything we know about GTA 6 so far, including map, location, and more

GTA 6 is quite possibly the most anticipated video game of all time. The sequel to the ridiculously successful GTA 5 has remained shrouded in mystery for the better part of a decade.

It was only in February 2022 that Rockstar Games officially announced that GTA 6 even existed, before early footage of the game leaked online in one of the year’s biggest scandals. Rockstar acknowledged the hack, confirming its authenticity - and many of the rumours regarding the game’s location, characters, and more.

GTA 6 Latest News

Before we go any further, you may well be wondering what the latest is with GTA 6. You likely won't be too surprised to learn the answer is "not much, actually". Still, a few things have gone down in the last few months.

Just recently 50 Cent posted a Vice City teaser before swiftly deleting it. While the rapper never specified that it was specifically related to GTA 6, what we already know about the game's setting strongly suggests that he was hyping up the new game.

A reliable Rockstar insider also suggested that the company is eyeing up a 2024 release window for the game... but that to hit this deadline it will need to cut some content and include it later as DLC.

At the end of last year, Rockstar Games posted a teaser video that sent fans into a frenzy. The mystery clip ended up having nothing to do with GTA 6, sadly, but the reaction just shows that we need some official now!

Microsoft also recently suggested that GTA 6 could be arriving as soon as 2024, although from what we can see it looks as if it's based that information on rumour and speculation, rather than anything particularly concrete. Which brings us on nicely to the matter of GTA 6's release date!

GTA 6 Release Date: When Will GTA 6 come out?

Well, isn’t that the biggest question of all? Fans have been desperate to learn GTA 6’s release date for years now, but it’s a secret Rockstar and parent company Take-Two Interactive is keeping very close to the chest.

The most recent leaks seem to suggest that GTA 6 is currently eyeing up a 2025 release date, although some believe it won’t be with us until 2026 at the earliest. Whichever way you slice it, this means we still have a long wait in front of us. This isn’t hugely surprising, of course, given the footage of the game that circulated online presented a project that was quite clearly still in early development.

GTA 6 Trailer: Is There A GTA 6 trailer yet?

If there was, this is where we’d share it with you. Alas, the GTA 6 trailer remains maddeningly elusive. You can probably still find the leaked footage online, but it’s probably best to wait for Rockstar to drop an official teaser.

So when will Rockstar reveal a GTA 6 trailer? Given that the game is still rumoured to be years away, we can’t be sure. However, with the 25th anniversary of the Grand Theft Auto franchise fast approaching, many believe that we’ll be getting a little something sooner rather than later.

GTA 6 Location: Where Will GTA 6 Be Set?

GTA 6 is almost certainly set in Vice City, Rockstar’s fictional take on Miami. Multiple leakers and alleged industry insiders have been claiming this for years, and the leaked footage from earlier this year certainly seems to suggest that a return to Vice City is on the cards. We can’t say for sure at this stage, but the brief parts of the open world we saw in the footage before it was scrubbed from the internet certainly resembled a modern take on the Vice City we all remember from the excellent GTA: Vice City.

GTA 6 Map: Is There A Map Yet?

Fortunately for Rockstar, GTA 6’s map was one of the few things that didn’t leak earlier this year. However, fans think they’ve been able to piece together a rough approximation of the game’s open world using the leaked footage, and it’s shaping up to be pretty massive. A recent survey sent out by Rockstar also suggests the map's ambitious size will require a new fast travel system.

GTA 6 Protagonist: Who Is GTA 6’s Main Character?

One of the most prevalent GTA 6 rumours is that the game will feature a female protagonist - a first for the series. This particular piece of info was all but confirmed when the leaked footage appeared to show an armed female character rob a store before engaging in a shoot-out with the cops. You know, just GTA stuff.

Whether or not there will be multiple protagonists remains unclear, although it’s worth noting that GTA 5 gave us three playable characters: Michael, Travis, and Franklin. We’d be surprised if GTA 6 didn’t go down a similar route.

Will GTA 6 be on PlayStation 4/Xbox One?

Given how ambitious GTA 6 sounds, and how far off it still is from releasing, we would be amazed if it was available for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. These consoles will be over ten years old by the time the game finally launches! It seems a safe bet, then, that GTA 6 will be exclusively for new-gen consoles (PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S) and PC.

What Game Engine Will GTA 6 Use?

GTA 6 is using an updated version of Rockstar’s proprietary RAGE engine, the same engine the studio uses on the vast majority of its games - including GTA 5 and Red Dead Redemption 2. If you’ve seen Red Dead Redemption 2, you know GTA 6 is going to be face-meltingly beautiful.

Earlier this year, one insider described GTA 6’s engine as “ahead of its time”, and that the goal is to outperform even Unreal Engine. Time will tell if it succeeds. But again, I point to Red Dead Redemption 2.
